Birches and Barbies
- CURIOSITY CABINETS
- TALISMANIC BOXES
Birches and Barbies is a collection of material stories by Kathleen E. Dickhut.
Leftovers and left behinds found in the landscape and within human habitats become
art and functional objects. One incarnation blends sewn paper sachets with potpourri
made from roses grown, harvested and processed in Chicago. For other interpretations,
cigar boxes, refrigerator shelves, and vintage silverware display cases are used as “story
houses” for natural and cultural artifacts.
Individually created packets made from vintage, current and pattern papers filled with a
mix of cured and dried rose petals and garden herbs like lavender and rosemary.
Boxes made to hang decorated with images from fashion, architecture,
home and office interiors showcase objects found in nature or that represent scientific discoveries.
Repurposed containers such as cigar or recipe boxes covered with
vintage and current magazine or book cutouts with small artifact accents for handles and entertainment.
